What should we do about difficulty?

With the launch of 1.1, difficulty is gone. It may come back some day, but in its current form it caused too much confusion & frustration. Should we bring it back or is iSpy better without it? How could we make it easier to understand? Any other questions or comments regarding this feature?

I think it's better without it (in its current form). My ideas: The search area should not be connected with difficulty. Because even in a huge search area it can be easy to find the object. And in a tiny search area it can be nearly impossible to find the object if it is more or less hidden or camouflaged. I think that the different sizes of the search area is great, and also the possibility to set the difficulty, but it should be two different parameters. //klippbilden

I have mixed feelings. If I understand it, one of the original intentions of the broad search area was to allow large, easy to spot objects a larger area -- and smaller objects a more focused search. Ideally, that might level the playing field. But of course it can be turned the other way around, which is where any problem might lie.

Needle in the haystack missions can quickly turn tedious (particularly if it is in an unknown restaurant or bar - never my favorite locations for this game in the first place). On the other hand, if things are too easy it becomes almost like gowalla, walk up, check in by taking a picture, and do something else. That takes some of the fun out of an "aha" moment.

The third factor, as Klippbidden pointed out, is that difficulty is not necessarily related to the size of the search area.

The bottom line is that different people may want to play the game in different ways. So I would award a single "point" for each find, but allow some flexibility with the search zone (I am not sure it needs to be a five block radius) and let the mission developer set an appropriate difficulty level. Not everything has to be made easy. If you are searching for a high-difficulty mission, you know what you are getting yourself into. But not everyone wants to do it.

Therefore, I would also allow people the ability to filter out particular missions that they are not interested in doing for one reason or the other - so they can concentrate on what is fun for them. Make this a bonus feature and I will pay for it! But that is the subject of a separate topic.

I am not sure. I like how everything is working now. It was nice when you would do a mission and you would get more then one point. Now it seems that the default is one. Maybe a difficulty setting, but with less options. Instead of having a choice of 1-4, just have it be 1-2. 1 would be for bigger/easy games, and 2 would be for smaller/harder games.
